Vermont looking to break from US

Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
I was reading an article on the Irish Independent web site about the state of Vermont looking to break away from the United States. Found it quite interesting as I never knew that Vermont was such a "radical" state compared to the rest. And it was interesting to read that they have had independent aims for a very long time. Plus I always assumed it was just some of the deep south states that still clung onto memories of the civil war and breaking away.

The article goes on to discuss how they have formed relations with the League of the South. I found this bit very alarming:

"Over the years the movement has grown more racist, claiming society is composed of a God-given hierarchy of groups that should not have the same rights and privileges as one another. Mr Hill now decries racial intermarriage under any circumstances and says that people other than white Christians will be allowed to live in his breakaway South only if they bow to "the cultural dominance of the Anglo-Celtic people and their institutions". Where the goal of secession was once largely rhetorical, it is now a seriously stated aim of his movement."

Wtf?? What crack pipe is this guy smoking? So if they do break away where do all the Mexicans go? Rather extreme views me thinks. And I particularly disliked his "Anglo-Celtic people" comment. How does one define an anglo-celtic person?

Anyway the article is here: http://www.independent.ie/world-news/north-america/the-state-of-independence-1116341.html

So is all of this big news or just stuff thats been bubbling under for years?

Just another one of the fringe nut-jobs that must be allowed to exist if you have an open society...fortunately this country has progressed to the point that such opinions are small, small minority.

I'd rate them at somewhere below the (related) militia movement of last decade as a threat, primarily because the militia guys actually killed people.

Sounds like the Maori Sovereignty movement here: a small number of people who want a scapegoat and think that they are the rightful rulers of the land.

I demand my own forum here on FO. In this promised land, there shall be only people who like pie and green [edit: and female bisexual asian traitors]. Everyone else may be allowed on a limited basis, if they submit to the supremacy of pie and green [edit: and female bisexual asian traitors].
  • I'll convert to green right away if you give me those female bisexual asian traitors up front.
  • But if that happened we would lose people like WMD Bush, Debt and inflation Carter and Lied under oath Clinton.

How could this be a bad thing?

There have been similar ideas for the Pacific Northwest. heck, even a fictional book has been written on it!
  • Oh yeah, some of my friends were joking about the Republic of Cascadia.

Hawaii has been wanting to go independant for some time.
  • Yeap, a few trees short of a forest that guy is.

That is because Hawaii was a sovereign nation until we sent in our marines and threatened the Queen between killing her people or surrender.
  • FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
Of all states, Hawaii would have the most legitimate claim to independence.

I think Texas actually has a clause stating they can jump ship at any time?

Texas is funny. I remember talking to a girl from there a few years ago, were in a pub and something came on the tv where a bunch of americans were singing the national anthem. I said oh look they are singing you countries anthem. She replied "Texas is my country!" .... Okay sorry! :D

In Ireland, ignoring the whole Northern issue, most of the republic is pretty unified. There is usually rumblings in county Cork. Its know as the rebel county as it was the centre for the anti-treaty forces during the civil war. So most people from Cork dislike Dublin because its the capital and the symbol of the pro-treaty forces.

In the UK with the exception of Scotland and Wales, the Cornish are pretty uppity about breaking away.

Secession is illegal... the Civil War decided that issue. It also established the supremacy of the federal government over the individual states. So even if they did have a clause that said such a thing (which I doubt because most of the Southern state constitutions were rewritten after the war) the federal government still has final say. :)

Whats funny is all the "proposed" ideas for Cascadia inevitably include regions inhabited by a decent amount of people who would find the whole idea offensive? Like vast swaths of areas east of the cascades :P And the Idea of including those chunks of idaho!? Those people would start a open civil war with your new "regime" so fast you wouldn't have time to blink!

Well Quebec has been rooting for independence from Canada for ages, there was talks that if that was the case there was speculation that the maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and NFLD) would become part of New England- gah.
My Mom in her infinite wisdom declared that the rest of Canada should vote on whether or not they should be allowed to stay.

I remember reading about when De Gaulle visited Quebec and made some comment about it breaking free (think he said something along the lines of "free quebec" in french). People were quick to mention Algeria. Think that shut him up pretty quick.

    North America in 2060:

Canada, US and Mexico form the North American Union. Quebec breaks off to form its own nation...
