I really don't get where Apple is coming from on this. On one hand, they've been teasing up one side and down the other that they're open to third-party apps. Then they encrypt the entire iPhone system so that third-party anything is virtually impossible to do. There's a theory that they're building up to some kind of iPhone Software Store, where Apple would control the distribution of all third-party apps, but that seems shockingly stupid to me.

On the other hand, it also seems shockingly stupid to me that Apple didn't buy up Bungie before Microsoft did and have Halo be for the Mac what it ended up being for the XBox. Apple can be pretty shockingly stupid some times.

Yeah they are making a mistake here. Locking a phone like that is annoyingly. When I got my Sony E k700i Vodafone had locked the feature allowing you to use custom ringtones. Why? So you had to buy them of their store. A right pain in the ass and too much hassle for me to get the phone patched to allow me to copy my ringtones onto it. I think Apple really need to reconsider opening up the phone to 3rd party apps. Its the only way to ensure a reach development community and to give users a choice.

Oh don't go there with Bungie. One of the great mac game developers who actually always did a good job of releasing dual format titles. Ah Myth and Myth 2 Soulblighter... great games. And I still remember Jobs raving about Bungie and Halo and the first ever live demo of Halo running on a mac, and not a pc! They really dropped the ball there. But then Apple don't do games
• I don't own an Iphone but assume AT&T was going to sue Apple for breach of contract for allowing other carriers on the phone. AT&T can charge whatever they want if they are the sole provider. I blame more AT&T then Apple.

Yeah, it could be AT&T, or it could be one of their new partners in Europe. My read is that the reason the iPhone was locked against apps to make it resistant to viruses, worms, and other malware. Still, I think it's stupid.

I can kinda see their argument for this. But then OS X is open anyway to thousands of 3rd part apps. It doesn't kill the system for everyone. If people don't know what they are doing and screw stuff up then thats their fault. My boss has one of the XDA windows mobile PDA's and he's forever installing/uninstalling stuff on it and restoring settings etc. He just chucks crap on to it. I mean he even had the first Vista beta release installed on his work pc. He spent most of the time in my room using a spare pc because Vista didn't work right. Stupid logic really. But at the end of the day its down to user choice. I like the iPhone mainly for the touch screen and the interface. But not being able to add a for eg GPS package is poor. Too restrictive. And its a bit short sighted of Apple to think that they can provide every single app that users will ever need for their iPhone. That way of thinking just doesn't fit.
• I would have thought Apple learned a lesson when Microsoft kicked there butt.
