Stargate Atlantis

WORFWORF The Burninator
It's back, season 4 started a few days ago. I'm guessing since no one else has posted about it, those who did watch it were unimpressed?

• Although the episode was turbocharged with (sometimes unnecessary) plot twists, it was a worthy opening for S4. IMO.

I thought it was pretty cool, a good start to S4. I'm however not looking forward to losing Weir, as I am a fan of her, but I will be interested to see which way they take the show.

It was ok but nothing wow. I have found the twists in Atlantis a bit annoying at times, almost too much used in an attempt to make it exciting. Can be overkill at times. Be interesting how the character changes effect the story line. There is a risk though that things remain a bit flat which is pretty much how I felt season 3 was. Were a few good episodes but overall the writers wrote themselves into a corner.

Still though I suppose its sci fi and will keep me less bored for 45mins once a week.

What a twist!

Everything seemed fairly twisty for the sake of being twisty, but it wasn't bad. It pulled pretty much every space opera twist at once.

Lets make a list:
Dead Batteries
Short Circuit in the Mainframe
Ticking Timer
"Brain Tumor"
Unavoidable Obstacle of Doom!
Last-minute critical damage
"Leap of Faith" (hyperdrive)
"Alternative Medicine" (see cylon baby juice)
and so much more!

Still enjoyed it. The cliffhanger resolutions in the Atlantis realm seem to be a bit of a let down, so I'll keep on watching as long as it stays entertaining. I've never been a fan of the soft reboot the producers put the show through. I felt that it finally started to get itself solidly planted in a story until the season finale worked to destroy any progress made. I was fairly satisfied with the show being neglected by the staff of SG-1. :p

Some of this coming season does appear to look like it may be good, but I'll miss Weir. She might have been a bit annoying to listen to, but her presence always felt a little more human than the military rule of Stargate Command. And it seems like Shepherd, due to conflicts stemming from the departure of Weir as a front runner, may have a reduction in screen time this season. I'm hoping not. I was also rather hoping to avoid any of the Carter/McKay stuff, but it seems like that is inevitable now.

Overall?
underwhelming, but still enjoyable.

A little mindless, but enjoyable. I'm glad it's back. I'd forgotten what was it like without my weekly dosage of Rodney.

Sanfam: I watched it again earlier this afternoon, and I thought to myself then that they've certainly gone right through the list-of-things-to-go-wrong havent they? It wasn't up to the same quality of some previous episodes, but enjoyable overall.

One thing that did, not annoy me exactly but slightly irritate me was Jewel Staite actually. Not her as such, but I just didnt like the way the writers seemed to have written her character. It just seemed like she was totally lost for what to do or say half the time, and just overall a bit weak. It was her first real episode though, so hopefully it will improve with time and better writing. I may also be biased because I'm still half thinking of her character from Firefly, who was also not the quickest ;)

Plus, in the finale, all Dr. Keller did was tell Weir that she wasn't up to the responsibility of being the head doctor on Atlantis. I think her uncertainty in this episode was just a continuation of that.

I liked how it was a bunch of little things that kept going wrong, instead of just the one big thing. Reminded me of ass-paralyzing disasters I've been through.

Jewel isn't going to be a long-term regular, so she won't likely get all that much actual development. One particular unnecessary attention-grabbing gimmick from S3 is going to come back and give us a rehashed unnecessary attention-grabbing gimmick for S4. Woo. Unnecessary drama and the urge to undo it!
• WORFWORF The Burninator
There's one twist they didn't pull but I think they're leaving that for the next episode: alien attack!

Yeah that one will be for the next episode. Is she not going to be in for more than a season then? If the writing for her picks up then I think I'd be happy for her to stay in for longer. She's a good actress, and lets face it she is hot ;)

Which gimmick is that you're refering to Sanfam?

On a tangent Nathen Fillion is this season's "bad" neighbor on Desperate Housewives.

Yeah I'm afraid Jewel will be under used really. She's a very good actress and yes darn hot too!

I do assume we will get a certain dosage of Carter/Rodney which will probably be amusing for 1 episode but I hope they don't drag it out. Actually I always wanted to see Felger and Rodney have a good scrap over Carter. That would have been funny. The 2 episodes with Felger in in SG1 were great. I especially loved the one where his assistant and Carter have a cat fight with him and O'Neill watching. Pure class!! :D Shame his character has been pushed aside.

The gimmick might be the airfix puddle jumper that clever Rodney was fiddling with ;)

It still bugs me though the way Ford was written into the doldrums. Then they brought Michael along and low and behold he too had the same treatment. So whats going to happen now in the s4 finale? Ford, Michael with his freakoid Wraiths and the other replicators all descend on Atlantis for a final show down? Wouldn't surprise me if they do that to be honest.
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
I believe the gimmick is (Major But Insanely Easily Leaked Season 3 Spoiler) Spoiler: Dr. Beckett's death which will rise again as (Major But Insanely Easily Leaked Season 4 Spoiler Spoiler: Dr. Beckett's two-episode return. I'd just to point out that I was actually spoiled on this before the episode where he actually died aired in the U.S.
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Oh that, yes... Pegasus Galaxy Scoobie Doo here we come ;)
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I'm still shocked at the mangling of Ford. The worst part, though, is simply that Rainbow Sun was a hardcore Stargate fan and worshiped being on the program. For someone who was actually capable of acting, death-by-neglect was just terrible.

And Mac got it. Spoiler: I really don't like it when writers pull emotional strings just for the sake of doing so, especially when it just so happens to be Beckett, who never deserved it and had no reason to die. Worse, bringing the character back just insults the viewers by negating the emotion placed in his death. While I was unhappy about his firey loss, I was fine with him just staying dead as people normally do. Just say no to character necromancy. The wee turtles can take care of themselves!
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
Spoiler: Funny you should mention that. Joe Mallozzi posts set diagrams on his blog from time to time, and in one season 4 episode or another, we'll see the Wee Turtles have been passed on to McKay.
• HuntSmackerHuntSmacker Firstones Ambassador to Starcraftia
Why is it we never got hardly ANY mentions of Sams relationship with O'Neill? I hope this is attended to in Atlantis!
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Because if you mention it, then the relationship changes. You can't let it advance or change without risking new, unique attempts at writing. See: Farscape.
• If they really want to piss everyone off they'll say she married Mitchell.

But I do believe Tapping said in an interview we have a brief moment in which we find out her relationship status this season.
• I thought the episode was OK. I am too understand the Ori have been exterminated with the Asgards weapons on a fleet of Earth ships and everything is fine with Earth?
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
^It probably wasn't quite that easy. The producers thought "The Ark Of Truth" (the Direct-to-DVD movie where the Ori are, presumably, defeated once and for all) would've been released by now when they made the episode.

Now I'm curious about how the timelines all line up, and where Unending, First Strike/Adrift/Lifeline, and Ark Of Truth take place in relation to each other. When the last season ended, I joked that everyone on Atlantis was going to feel really stupid about going ahead with the nuclear strike because the PWARG wasn't finished when they found out they'd actually just gotten all of the Asgard knowledge (including how to make a giant replicator disruptor) on a silver platter. Now, if this three-parter takes place after "Ark Of Truth," it must be well after "Unending," so my observation of that dramatic irony is not valid.

And speaking of pissing everyone off, I heard that there was a cut scene in Unending which implied that she paired off with Teal'c while they were trapped on the ship.
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
The timelines are indeed going to be interesting and potentially screwy. I wonder when Carter and Bill were on the midway station fixing things, was this after the Ori conflict? Perhaps the station took some damage. Maybe with Carter heading for Pegasus she will have the plans with her to build the new replicator gun? But tha would be too clean to wipe them out in one go. There's bound to be a twist somewhere...

Carter & Teal'c? Hmm, I suppose with the whole coupling thing in that episode she didn't have much choice ;) "Indeed" as Teal'c would say :p

After reading the last few posts, my head hurts.. :P
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
The station hadnt taken damage Falcon1, they were putting the finishing touches to it I believe
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Did seem to take em a while to finish it then. I suppose it was rushed into service though.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I'm pretty sure the interior was exposed to space before hand, it was just two stargates linked together by some sort of framework. Now the gates are held inside the station.
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Good point. Goes to show how much of an impact the last seasons have had, I'd usually remember stuff like that.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Heh, I only remember it because it's the same episode where Weir talks about playing World of Warcraft, that amused me.

The only other episodes I remember from last season are "The Game" and the one where Michael creates his Alien like minions.

Yeah. They used the mis-shaped stargate 3D model with only eight chevrons instead of nine and the back being the same as the front in the midseason finale. I noticed that this week, in the matte shot of the interior of Midway Station, you could still see the four giant space clamps holding the stargates in place. I couldn't tell if it was still the inaccurate model, though.
• It was a 5 second FX sequence , don't blink
