I hate solicitors

I really do!! They ruin your life, give you nothing but stress stress stress and some more stress and charge you a heft sum for the privilege as well. When the revolution comes they will be amongst the first to face the firing squad.

To cut a long story short I sold my flat 5 months ago. Legal crap is still dragging on and if its not sorted in the next few days my buyer will pull out and my house purchase will also collapse. I'm so close to blowing a fuse its unreal. After the last 2 days proceedings I'm seriously having to stop myself from paying a visit to certain solicitors and ripping their head off. Wish I knew some crew that could "have a word" with them on my behalf. Wishful thinking.

Sorry for the vent/rant... had to get it out.

Given that solicitor is the general equivilent a lawyer in the US, what is their roll in a real estate transaction? In the US, unless a problem with the tranaction has arises, lawyers generally don't get involved in smaller real estate contracts such as a home or flat.

Would it help if we started telling lawyer jokes?

How many lawyers does it take to grease a trasher?
One, if you run him through real slowly.

What exactly is a solicitor and what purpose do they serve, or not serve?

A solicitor deals with a client directly, as opposed to a barrister who does the stuff in court. Countries like the UK and NZ have a split system where usually a lawyer will be a solicitor or a barrister.
  • Sorry to hear about the real estate/legal troubles, Falcon. I hope it all works out for you.

I thought about going to law school, but then I decided that I would rather be a history teacher instead... good move.
  • Interesting how a word can be so differnt, in the US a solicitor is a person who is trying to sell ya something....by phone... on the street... mail.... email.... Just as stupid and bothersome as a lawyer...

They both go to the same corner of hell so they are not that different after all.

Cheers guys. Still no progress. The main problem is my flat is leasehold which means I own the flat but not the land on which it stands. That belongs to the freeholder. And he is a right arse. Funnily enough his solicitors are worse than him. They live in a different time zone with no regard for what's going on... that is my buyer threatening to pull out. Speaking to the estate agents yesterday I got them to chase these wasters to get things moving (having already told my solicitor to do the same... its been like this for nearly 3 weeks). Apparently the main solicitor let fly at the estate agent. Hmm I think I'll be doing more than letting fly at him if he doesn't get his act together. He's just a stuck up, semi retired old git who is stuck in the 19th century way of doing solicitor work. And since they are based in Romsey, a town above Southampton that makes it even worse. Romsey is a snob place really. Toffs who live there call it Rumsey because it makes it sound more posh.

Space Ghost, wise choice! Good topic to choose :)

Hee nice one Jake, though right now I have 2 of em lined up just for that purpose ;)

I'm so glad there's hardly any freehold land in NZ. Only a couple of places in Auckland, with one of those being held by the council because it was gifted to the city a hundred years ago.

Freehold is ok when it applies to a house. But when flats are involved and if the lease is not water tight then there's problems.

Well today the estate agents kicked a bit of ass. They recommended my solicitors through their conveyancing arm. So they are pissed plus embarrassed by what's going on. The branch manager has spoken to one of the senior partners who is now aware of the whole mess and is going to take action. I hope he/she will read the riot act to my solicitor as she has been pretty useless. Oh and the old git solicitor hasn't done the legal document he was supposed to draft. He hasn't had time. He's had notice and my money since tuesday... the Dark Side calls me...
