What the hell is a "Spider"?

I check out who's at the boards now since we've got over 150 right now and I see a ton of "Spiders". What the hell is that supposed to be?

    They are programs by search engines. They use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Spiders are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches.

    They are blockable, but then the site won't be indexed on a search engine.
