Starfuries vs. X-Wings

It was funny so I thought I'd inflict it on you.

• how frigging long IS that thing?

sheesh...

anyhoo... Starfury, because it can turn in a zero-g enviroment. :D
• You have to engage an X-Wing before it accelerates to attack speed.
• Technically, here are the facts:

X-wings
1) An X-wing has extreme G-Forces which imply it has extreme power. If the Inertial dampher goes offline in an X-wing, you have to have wookie strength to bearly move the joystick (Reference: X-wing Rouge Squadron Series books, forgot what book that this happened to a calimarian)
2) X-wings are long range.
3) X-wings have shields
4) X-wings do have a fairly decent deceleration
5) X-wings are atmospherically capable
6) X-wings keep their fuel in their belly
7) Powered by a centrifugal vapor fusion and ionization reactor
8) An X-wing can run for a week at non-combat
9) An X-wing can rip an AT-AT apart, and take out a capital, nough said.
10) An X-wing can carry 6 torpedos or 8 missiles
11) four single fire or dual link or quad link lasers

Aurora Starfury
1) Yes they can do snap turns and special manuvers in zero g
2) At extreme speeds, it takes lots of time to slow down.
3) No shields, just light armor
4) It keeps it fuel in the wings
5) It's powered by a fusion reactor
6) Has an non-combat operation range of ~5 hours
7) Manuver too hard, and your brain becomes jello.
8) A single blast can destroy a fighter, but minimal damage to a capital
9) Carries 8 missiles
10) 2 primary, 2 secondary guns. Each is dual linked.
11) Falls to the ground like an asteroid
• So what your getting at Trident is, that in a head on fight, X-Wing wins every time.

But from any other direction, they are screwed 9 ways 'til sunday 'cause they can't turn. :D

And sure, they are atmospheric capable, but they still will crash, what with no way to slow down...no air brakes, no forward engines, no flaps to adjust yaw/bank/pitch...

they are just screwed for anything other than a stright line. :D

Provided said capital ship is stupid enough to put its shield generators up on top of the bridge where they're nicely exposed. ;)
• Actually X-wings are quite nimble in space and air. In space the fighter uses gyro's/thrusters/and variable thrust per engine to manuver. Per say not as nimble as a Tie fighter, but they are capable of alot. The X-wing posesses a repulselift engine like the snowspeeders do. It allows the X-wing to manuver in air like a T-47 skyhopper. Also if they had no way to stop, then how did they land them on the ground? Yea an X-wing can't do turns like a Starfury can in space, but a Starfury can't follow a X-wing into the atmosphere. Try to attempt a tight turn in a starfury at full burn and see how long your brain lasts. Yea an Starfury can fly next to an x-wing, fly the same straight line, and fire sideways. Your right about attacks though, the X-wing has a limited firing arc in the front while the zero-g turning givese the Starfury an unprecendented firing arc. If a Starfury was forced to use Star Wars physics, it would be a heavier TIE Fighter. If an X-wing was forced to use real physics but kept the technology it has, it wouldn't be quite as manuverable as the Starfury, but it does have thrusters in it's wings, and gyro's to induce rolling, thus it would give the Starfury a good challenge. A thunderbolt on the other hand would give it more trouble. Also the engine of a X-wing works simmular to a jet engine does, so it might be possible it can be used as a retrothruster (It think luke did it once in a book)

Well despite lots of sources say that the domes are shield generators, they are in fact sensor domes. (source: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/towers.html) Shields are some very explicit design using ducts and whatnot... The article tells more.

They were shield generators in Rebel Assault, and when I blew them up, the ship went with them. That's good enough for me.

• Tell me what LA game has done anything correctly for any ships?
Yes most of the games do indicate that they are shield generators.
And Rebel Assault is a blastemy of a game, it's an arcade game, very little fact to it what so ever.
If you can get an offical person from ILM, George Lucas, or anyone associated with designing the bastards to say it's full fledged entire ship shield generators, then I will condone it as fact. Until then it is sensor domes that has built in shields to protect them, which was started by an offical person.

Caligula.....that doesn't even warrent a response.
• I guess the tek on the X-Wing is far advanced to the Starfury. *shrug

Isn't the domes-as-shield-generators even referenced in one of the movies somewhere...hell, I don't remember now.

Hee hee. I'm just getting some nostalgia here. Back when I first joined the WB B5 boards in 1999 there was this guy named Nukem who used to always make topics like this. I find them so pointless. I could go and make up my own universe with ships a billion times more powerful than ships on anything else, but so what?
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Starfuries are more sexy. 'Nuf said.

Thunderbolts are more teh sexier.

They destroy the domes in Jedi and Then I think they say something about the shiels are down, or maybe "They're going for the shield generatore" before they destroy the dome. One of those two. And then an a-wing flies into the bridge. It is the superstar destroyer.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
You see the "shield generators/sensor domes" getting blown up, then it cuts to the bridge of the super star destroyer and one of the bridge officers saying "they've knocked out our bridge deflector shields". To me that would imply that the domes are shield generators, but then again its not an explicit reference to those actually being the shield generators, but I think the inference is pretty strong.

Personally I agree with DarthCaligula. The only way I think you can compare ships from alternate universes is on a purely aesthetic level rather than a performance/technological level. Therefore, the most beautiful ships to my mind are (in no particular order): Enterprise-A (cant beat its pure elegance and simplicity), Enterprise-E (just looks uber), Star Destoyers (they just look awesome! especially the SSD's), Star Fury's (sorry Messiah, but T-bolts just arent as good looking), B5 itself (no explanation needed), Omega-destroyers (pure functionality and elegance of design), G'Quan cruisers.....one or two others :D
