New Tolkien

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Ok, I'm mostly posting this because my wife wants to know, I think she may be planning on stopping by the forum at some point, but wants to see if people are like minded first, lol.

What do you all think about the "New" Tolkien book, I've not yet read it personally. Should his son keep releasing stuff? or is it sacrilidge...

I've heard about it but haven't seen any reviews/opinions. Hard to tell if they have done the right thing by doing this.

I have to admit I have never read any of his books. I tried to start reading 'fellowship of the ring', but couldnt get past the first few pages

I wonder if the publisher is really trying to get something on the go- if their company's in trouble, that's an awfully old thing to bring up...

I love the LOTR books, but they are not light reading.

I haven't read it yet. I really, really want to (for better or for worse), but it's definitely not light reading and I don't have much spare time at the moment. Even if you placed LotR at the "light reading" end of the scale, The Children of Húrin would still be way over at the "heavy reading" end of the scale. Consider this sample from a local review:
Don't even think of picking this book up unless you're able to enjoy passages like this one: "Glaurung therefore passed Mablung by, a vast shape in the mist; and he went swiftly, for he was a mighty Worm, and yet lithe. Then Mablung behind him forded the river in great peril; but the watchers upon Amon Ethir beheld the issuing of the Dragon, and were dismayed."
The reviews in the local paper and mentioned by the local paper have in general been positive, but warn that it's very eclectic (as should be expected of something made by scrounging together notes that were made over half a century) and not to expect another LotR. The Silmarillion is apparently a better comparison for style and heaviness of language. It's also apparently very cruel, far removed from an adventure story and much more of a brutal tragedy.

Sounds like fun, I'm definately going to read it, but not until this fall/winter when i'm not working 12-18 hours/day. it definately sounds like something that i need to devote a lot of time and energy to

I've read the Trilogy and the Hobbit and found them fine (though I did skip the whole Tom Bombadil stuff, couldn't hack that). I started on the Silmarillion and got about 10 pages in and stopped. I really need to get back to it but its so heavy at times. Not very light reading after a hard day at the office.

I had the same experience, LOTR + Hobbit, loved them, Silmarillion, just couldnt slog my way through.
  • i loved the silmarillion even though it took me about 3 times as long to read as any other book.

i tried several times to read the few missing pieces i still lack of tolkien - history of middle-earth after the lost tales - but i never could get back into the whole story. i guess it's a LotR overload from all the movies, games and marketing...

so for me it's waiting for george r.r. martin to finish his series (yeah i know, happy waiting) :D

Well, Tolkien himself wanted his world to be expanded by others, so yeah, Im all for it.
  • ^^^this....Tolkien wanted people to make anthologies in his realm, but they never did.

I liked the Silmarillion, granted I read it in forced reading sessions during middle school, but it was still a cool book. Hard to understand though.
