I killed Bambi!

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
You know, Deer should really learn to look both ways before leaping out into the road,

Alas Bambi was no match for a Ford Taurus.

Not a fun way to end the evening.

Did the Taurus survive? Deer are quite heavy.

    Sad :(
  • Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Yes, the Taurus survived, about $1,000 in cosmetic body damage, the deer was mid stride as it lept across the road, so i got its legs, bounced its body up onto the hood and over the windshield on the drivers side, I fared much better than the deer, who had to be put down once the Sheriff's deputy arrived. Fisty lil guy tho, he managed to get himself across the road despite 4 broken legs, and then it took 4 shots to put him down, however, the Deputy could have just been a bad shot.

All in all, not the way i wanted to end my evening.

I hear this sort of thing happens quite often, and always results in the deer having to be put down (as well as usually severe damage to the vehicle). I'm surprised their instincts don't tell them to avoid the fast moving lights.

Except it is the opposite, they see bright lights and they freeze.

....Therefor, every deer killed by a car should get a darwin award for removing itself from the gene pool.

wait...doesn't seem to have made a difference yet. Oh well. ;)

    Glad your OK man!

that happened to my dad a few months ago driving back from the yacht on the west coast :(

    glad you're ok mate
  • we nearly had something like that happen a few years back. small car, 5 people in it driving back from a seminar on a sunday afternoon.. girl in the back says "hey look a deer!" running left of the road on a field then 10 seconds later the driver hit the brakes like mad and stopped the car a meter from the deer who seemingly teleported onto the road.

happened so fast none of us could really follow it. scared the shit out of everyone

This guy wasn't Tharn. (tharn, for those who dont know, is the term coined by Richard Adams in Watership Down for rabbits freezing when they see a car's headlights) He didn't freeze, he was a moving target, I"m just glad we were only going 35 at the time. It does almost always result in the deer having to be put down, In Maine, You are allowed to keep your kill if you want, Venison is very good, but you have to transport the kill and clean it etc.

It also usually results in severe damage to the car. he was mid stride when we hit him, so he was in the air, he slid up the hood and over the driver sside windshield and off into the road, most of his mass hit the front of the hood then up and over, rather than him bouncing into the windshield, or the bumper taking all the impact.

Here is Missouri, deer are vary overpopulated given that other than man, they have no real predators left, especially in the more populated areas. Unfortunately any attempts to control these populations in these suburban/urban areas results in an outcry from the residents, when in reality, thinning the population would be better for both dear and humans.

WoW! Good that nothing worse happened.

I work the graveyard shift and when I drive to and from work there has been quite a few times when rabbits have jumped in front of the car but I've managed to not drive over them. They've never really frozen by the light, they might just run along with the road and just before you pass them they jump over the road.

We live on an Island off the coast of Maine, and we have a problem with Deer overpopulation, thieir solution was a limited hunt, but it was voted down, as firing guns on the island would be bad, bullets travel quite far.

Quite simple, just yell, "oh my god, its comming right for us!" then mow them down with an assault rifle. :D

No, it's "Thin out their numbers," now.

We used to have a deer problem here. They were imported for hunting (as often seems to be the case with unwanted animals here). At one stage, the government paid a bounty for dead deer, which apparently sometimes led to quite heated exchanges between men in helicopters with guns over who's kill the deer was. :D Nowadays, deer farming has become quite a prosperous practice.

Perhaps you should use the Centauri method when removing the Shadow vessels from that island.

    :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they want to inhabit the island afterwards :p
  • Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Yes, blowing up the island might be a little extreme. just a bit tho.

I'm glad you are OK. One of my coworkers hit a deer two weeks ago and it did quite a bit of damage to his car. My finance's brother is a paramedic and he has been on a few calls where a person in the front seat was injured or killed by a deer coming through the windshield. Thankfully, my mom got me deer warning things for the front of my car... we'll see if they work.

The only thing I ever hit was a skunk. I was driving to work at 5:30am and it was still completely dark. I was going about 70mph on the highway, no chance to slow down and my headlights catch a black spot in the road that seriously looked like nothing special...until it moved. By then it was too late....it made me sad, the first time I ever killed anything bigger than a spider.

My dad had a really close call once. When he was living in Vermont, he came within a few feet of hitting a MOOSE. General rule is, if you hit a moose, whether it's moving or standing still at the time, you die. Plain and simple. Hitting a moose is like hitting a brick wall.
  • Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
We've almost hit a moose before, it was in the road, we had to swerve into the other lane to avoid it, if there had been oncoming traffic, we'd have had to make the choice of hitting the moose, or oncoming traffic. i think i'd have chosen the oncomming traffic,

For those who may not have actually seen a moose in real life, they are effing HUGE.

At the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, Vermont (a place you MUST visit if you ever get the chance), they have a stuffed moose that was caught by the collector whose collection is what the museum exists for (and OH MY GOD the collection is out of this world, you could never believe one man collected all this in one lifetime...there is actually a stuffed Dodo, no joke). Anyway, that stuffed moose is supposed to be one of the largest, if not the largest (I forget now), on record. Granted I was younger and shorter the last time I saw it but I'd swear it was 15 ft tall.

Yes, you must be careful to avoid Moose and Squirrel. ;)
