I will agree with you that GitF was a great episode that I did really enjoy, but the last season was just pure rubbish. I couldn't watch it, it was just so bad. It was the same thing every single episode (admittedly, those that i saw so there may have been some good ones in there); they go in, they get in trouble, the sidekick shouts "Doctor!", he whips out the sonic screwdriver and solves every problem they come across with it, the music gets really loud and then they save the day and lurch on to the next misadventure.
I know its about episodes, not the series as a whole but thats how I see it :p
gateworld is reporting
that Dr Beckett isn't totally dead after all and will be making a comeback in season 4! Not only am I thrilled that one of my favourite characters isnt dead, but what an attitude from the producer! If only there were more out there like that!
Spoiler: Maybe Beckett's a Cylon

If you didn't see The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit (two-parter), then that's the only way I could understand you having that opinion. Those two episodes were amazing.
That's what Doctor Who has pretty much always been like, only now it happens in one to two 45 minute episodes instead of four to six 22 minute episodes. The current series is following a very similar formula to that always used, only now the individual stories actually tend to have more connectivity between them within a single series.
I'm in near full agreement with ShadowDancer. I differ in that I don't see it as a terribly bad thing as the joy comes from the character interaction in the particular episodes, their development, and *how* the plot is sealed up rather than the MadLibs-esque plot itself.
I'll make one additional point: I'm a big fan of the Sonic Screwdriver. It always comes off as a cheap device to be used any time the plot needs a bump, either due to the writers creating too much drama or a situation in which the characters cannot think themselves out of. When the Sonic Screwdriver is pulled out for anything more than that which a normal screwdriver would be used for, it seems to trivialize the role of the characters. Take, for example, the sonic screwdriver "death ray" as used against the Cybermen after they had nearly trapped our heroes in an inescapable situation, or a similar use of it through a karaoke system in Runaway Bride (though that at least made some form of sense...but I still did not like it). I was rather pleased to have it thoroughly destroyed in Smith/Jones. Made me all happy inside that the characters had to prove their worth with good writing and well-thought actions.
And as much as I really want to disagree and argue with anyone who says the show is anything less than fantastically excellent, I'm getting tired and I've already had it out with Sanfam enough as it is so I will abstain from saying anything but I love the show to death and I think it's fantastically excellent. Period. Moving on.
