Strange and Annoying Problem....

I have a little problem I can't figure out how to get rid of.
I thrashed though my registry, I ran online and macafee virus scans, I've ran spybot and adaware, tried looking though every file that looks odd though windows, but I can't find the source of this sound clip that randomly plays on my computer. It started when I installed a codec pack. I contacted them about it and they checked their files and nothing there to cause it. The two sound clips that randomly play is the "Hey Ya" from Outkast's song, and "Hello I'm Harry Wong." Please someone help! I'm getting tired of being woke up from these dang things. I listen to streaming music when I sleep and the loud blast of these fricking things are... erg....

Help me Firstones, your my only hope!!

I'm by no means a computer expert, but my advice is to run something other than McAfee. But that's just my opinion.

Another idea is to find some kind of process logger and see what changes when the music plays. Also, does it only happen when you listen to streaming music or at other times? Have you checked your task manager for any odd processes?

Process Monitor from Sysinternals should tell you what's calling the sound. You'll have to wade through thousands of entries - just remember to filter out those you know aren't the source! Otherwise you'll be wading through hundreds of thousands :)

If you've hunted through your registry and not found anything in the standard places, it's probably been installed in one of the obscure keys that is started with certain processes, such as networking, rather than with windows boot.

It could be a rootkit. Take a look around with RootkitRevealer by Sysinternals to see if anything is floating where it shouldn't be on your drive.

  • Space Ghost, Spirit One, and A2597, I'm going to try your suggestions and see if they come up with anything.

Croxis: I checked task manager and everything is running that normally has been. The strange thing is it plays when I stream and when I don't stream it's totally random. There seems to be no pattern. It happens at random times, but no more than twice in one day. I'll have to find a process logger and see what's going on.

RC: I'll do that also. I'm desperate! If I can't find it soon, I'm going have to do a full wipe to get rid of this bastard.

HijackThis is good for checking what you have running.

Maybe get 'Process Explorer' by Mark Russinovich. It could help to find out what is wrong with your setup.
