The passing of Stargate SG1

Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Got to see the final episode of Stargate SG1 tonight (aired yesterday on Sky 1). Without giving away anything it was a good episode, a bit rushed in places (one could tell that the last few episodes were finished in a hurry, they could have done with another 2-3 to finish things off really) but over all it was good.

End of an era really. Even though it probably went on for 2 seasons too many it was still one of my favourite shows and will really miss it now.

Finishing off with Teal'c's best phrase seems appropriate... "Indeed!"

Yep. But remember it's not the end - Direct to DVD will come, and Atlantis is going to get full attention now which will probably throw in some SG-related stuff.

Indeed :) That is something to look forward too :)

Or it might not be, if they decide to throw in some SG1-S9-or-S10-related stuff. :p

Spoiler: I thought ending with the team in the gateroom embarking on a new mission was just the right way to end it. It's uplifting and reassuring, showing that while it may be the end of the tv-series, it's not the end of the story or the team.

Personally, I thought Moebius was a perfect ending for a series that didn't need any further continuation. It closed off all important arcs and is directly responsible for satisfying post-view experience. Had the writers not picked it up and dragged its now dead body across another two seasons, we would have had a much more positive experience overall. Seasons nine and ten only served to undermine the quality standards set in the previous seasons and alienated fans by falling regularly onto cheap writing tricks rather than intelligent scripting.

As far as the story of the team went, we had a perfect conclusion. Re-opening everything just caused more trouble than it was worth.

Atlantis is soon to be savagely beaten by the direct attention of the current writing staff, who have been disrespecting the loyal, intelligent fans by producing one and a half seasons of garbage. Spoiler: They have already eliminated two primary characters and opted for a soft reboot with S4 rather than take a very solid premise and run with it. I was not pleased, having just watched through season 3 fairly happily.

dammit why did i have to move flat right now? the only time i get to go on the net is at uni or when i pop home to my folks the odd night. meaning of course that i havent seen a new episode of rome, stargate, or bsg in about 3 weeks now :(

wont get the internet back either for another week and a half at least now either, as the address where i live doesnt seem to exist and the phone line seems to be connected to someone elses flat rather than mine. and for some reason it takes 15 days to transfer my ISP account to the new address, and yet it only takes 7 days for them to connect you as a new customer

I wouldn't mind a reboot of Atlantis if they get rid of the Spoiler: Replicators.

I found Michael and his Alien rip-off minions to be a more interesting threat..

i know. Spoiler: it feels like a cop out with the replicators as we've already seen them and they know how to deal with them: "oh look here's that really cool-looking anti-replicator weapon we just happened to be working on in case we ever come across them again!" plus they just arent that cool anymore

as for atlantis.... Spoiler: all i was left with after they knocked off beckett and now weir (and ford in S2) is a sense of wtf? why? what was wrong with how it was doing? plus im also pissed off as i think torri higginson is hot :D

anything that gets rid of the Dr Wier character is ok by my book. She makes the show unwatchable. Its not that I dont find her attractive, its that I freaking hate her character. She is annoying and really has no fucking business being charge of anything, least of all a military unit. She makes poor decisions and mulls over them like she is picking out wallpaper. Horrible character, less of her is good.

i dunno, i think having a civvie in charge was a good move. we had the military in charge with hammond/o'neill/landry in sg-1, so i think its nice to have someone in charge who doesnt just think in terms of how much hardware is needed for the next op. i thought she was the conscience of the show, much like daniel was for sg-1

Spoiler: I'm far more upset over Beckett than I am Weir. *sniff* This isn't to say I *liked* weir's character much (poorly written far too often and not the best actress for the role), but her character is critical to the role atlantis is supposed to play in the Stargate universe. I'll give S4 a fair chance, though.

What I truly fear is a resurrection of some sort for the dear doctor. While his death was pointless in terms of the overall story, it was at least well executed and the departure treated well. I don't want a return. It just cheapens the death and makes the characters' lives that much less important.

just watched the last episode. i think RubberEagle is right, that was a great way to end the show! im really going to miss sg-1; i think they'd just finally found the form that had been so lacking since seasons 7 and 8. at least they are doing these movies, and jack is back for the 2nd one according to gateworld!:)

Season 9-10 of SG1 was over all quite weak. We had the stupidly powerful Ori who were
Dealt with in about 2 episodes... hmm
The best episode out of those 2 was the 200th episode. It was hilarious. Not as good as the season 4 groundhog day mind you. That will always be the best SG1 episode ever.

I feel Atlantis doesn't know where its going. First we had the Wraith, nasty and powerful. And yes then we get Replicators... I mean ffs did the writers just pull that one out of the recycle hat? Why did we need them? Indeed Micheal and his lot added something interesting to the Wraith problem. And now relegated to "guest appearance" role just like Ford. Why? Must shake my head really.

They keep changing direction because they are desperate for ratings. The bar keeps dropping and the writers reach for the nearest emergency plot device. Michael had some great potential until they trivialized his role. Ford was another good initial character who was (through negligence on part of the writers) written into a corner. At that point, the viewers cared so little about him that the only choice was to write him out.
