    Well, it was dark because they didn't bother properly adapting a set made for television broadcast to film. Proper cameras require upgraded lighting...and the enterprise didn't offer that with its piddly ambient lighting.

    Generations only seemed to try to fix this with overpowering diffuse overhead lighting. And we see how that went.
