Alternatively, you could go buy an original XBox and run emulators on that for a lot less.
  • Well there are no desktops with a 3.2 GHz Cell Broadband Engine with 1 PPE and 7 SPEs. Plus to do 1080i i would need a mucho dollar upgrade on video cards.

Because the Cell isn't that efficient at general purpose computing. That's why you will find it in blades and TVs and consoles way before you'll find it in a home desktop.
  • It all a software thing. Typing with a ps3 controller is daunting. Cool link. Programming habits must change

Using a Cell in a home desktop is not a matter of programming habits. It's a matter of application suitability. If you want a Cell at home that isn't in a PS3, go and buy a scientific workstation rather than a home desktop.
  • very true, what application would you need a cell processor for in your living room. I have some ideas but who knows.

Yes. Damn them for trying to stop people stealing their product.

Do you have permission from the entity that paid for those license keys to use them? :)
Yep, the nerve of them to make it difficult to obtain what was once so easy. Who do they think they are? Its like its their property or something.

And yes, of course I do. It would be a crying shame to let all those licenses go to waste and never used ;)

In your living room? Media functions: games, decoding audio and video data streams. Basically, stuff the Cell processor excels at: processing large streams of data.

The stuff that a general purpose home desktop does for most users (word processing, spreadsheets, reading email, browsing the web) is stuff the Cell has very little, if any, advantage in. That's why the Amiga approach being taken by companies like AMD (having a special processor for different tasks such as graphics plus a dual or quad or n core general purpose processor) is better suited to home desktops.

I find it very odd that companies buy large numbers of computers with individual windows licenses when they have a perfectly good volume license handy. I just spent a week setting up a large number of computers at a school ready for the new school year. Every single one came with a license and disc for Windows XP Home. Every single one got wiped and a copy of volume licensed XP Pro installed. How much money is MS getting from companies buying computers complete with licenses that are never used?

It really is a strange practice but its extremely common. Part of the problem is most PC makers will simply not sell machines without windows. A few years back the company I worked for was doing a full nation wide PC refresh for all their sites. Even at that level of buying several thousand machines they could not get Dell to sell them without an OS. The cheapest solution ended up being buying them with windows 98 instead of 2000 since it cost about half as much. Either way the first thing that was going to happen was we were getting them wiped clean and installing the company win2K image with their volume license version. I had a filing cabinet filled to the brim with useless 98 license sheets.

    Nice link, Jack.

Wasn't aware of the OpenGL issue. That's going to screw a lot of apps up.
