Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

I like the camera work... very BSG. :) Also, they seem to have assembled quite a cast of Star Trek regulars. I think it should be interesting.

CG could use a bit work. It does have an amateurish look in some scenes, my bet is from blocking (I think it is called blocking). But, without knowing what it is, i is good to see Bester again! :D

Edit, my bro and i were talking about it on aim and I said this:
there is an amzing ammount of people who do the fan based movies, i mean uhura probably had more acting in that one line about the children than she probably ever did
• oh man that looks crap.
• ArethusaArethusa Universal Cathode
The vets managed to make the trailer watchable, at least. Koenig is still a ridiculously good actor.

Unfortunately, it looks like complete crap. My dining room has better lighting, the blocking's bad, the camera work is awful, the cg didn't take five minutes in Maya, and Alan Ruck is remarkably amateurish. The directing is nothing short of a disaster. I have trouble believing Tim Russ (or any professional actor, for that matter) directed this.

<3 Koenig, but this is terrible.

ive seen a couple of the trailers, but nothing of a finished product yet. If there is no finished product yet, then just skip to the next paragraph.

I did however watch the New Voyages episode with Koenig, Man that guy acts circles around the rest of the cast. I appreciate what they are trying to do, but its just so amateurish. Still Koenig rocks, I hope Bester makes it into the new B5 movies.
• The CGI sucks but I don't care about all that. Alan Ruck appears very introverted which is not good for a Star Fleet captain. But this is just a trailer I expect a good flip out from him. Maybe the equivalent of jumping into a pool of anitmatter and holding his breath. While Ferris Bueller shows up and jumps into save him. haha
The Klingon makeup was great can't argue with me on that. I hope that woman on ruck's left is not supposed to be a borg if so I wonder how big her rack is compared to Sevens.

Anyway jokes aside its looks like fun for some kind of alternate universe. Its likely that is the final rendering with the CGI since they did use in a trailer. I just hope these guys don't plan on doing some fan based Matrix crap. /puke

New Voyages is excellent and if you saw the earlier episodes the cast has improved alot. Koenig is the man dog and I felt his Russianess with each word he hung. The other Chekhov seemed to happy but thats probably a directing decision.

That green women on the left is none other than Chase Masterson or Leeta from DS9!

I am undecided about this... I don't really like fan stuff in general, and if this isn't going to be canon it could just get confusing?
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
Not being canon never stopped the comics, computer games, stageplays, novels, "Comic Relief" sketches (Polyester? But that was outlawed in the 21st century!), cartoons....

The point is, just don't be surprised when this, as fun as it may be, is flagrantly contradicted by anything made by anyone henceforth.

There we go again, who picked that score? Choir song or classical guitar just doesn't fit Star Trek, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. There are certain established expectations and associations and they take unnessary risks when they deviate from the tried and tested. Even George Lucas understood that much.

As for Walter Koenig's "acting..." if that's what you can call it. He plays his characters all the same, only the outfits and the haircuts change (well, mostly not even those). With all due respect, he doesn't have a lot of latitude. I liked him as Bester, but that's partly because of the excellent writing.

A lot of familiar faces indeed, but this trailer isn't particular convincing, it lacks the right momentum and instead of delivering a blast it only erupts into a fizzle.

Nice try and certainly deserves an "A" for effort, but it's not ready for prime time. This proves that actors can only do so much, there is much more to editing than meets the eye.

Nice pyrotechnics... except for the planet... it lacks mass. I don't expect it to blow up like a watermelon. :D

It's possible that Koenig's a hack. He's basically just playing a down and out version of Bester, here, after all. But that isn't necessarily his fault. I mean, look at the quality of the rest of the trailer. Look at the writing. Watch Alan Ruck's freshman acting major performance. If Koenig's a hack, he's a damn good hack.

It's far more likely he's just a damn good actor who keeps getting typecast. The same thing happened to George Takei, who's only managed to find creative freedom on stage.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Funny enough many actors only find that on the stage.
• if you star in sci-fi, you're typecasted for life.

I've rarely seen otherwise.
• Stage is incredibly fun and random. I had fun every minute and the idea that something could go wrong and each day we staged got more random. My sword broke the second night of Pirates and I ended up punching my policeman counterpart he gave me a tick about it later. But hehe I got a little laugh cause the guys an asshole anyway.

Thats another great thing about stage your inhouse fighting behind stage can sometimes manifest on stage subtely.

I was pretty jealous of Frederic the main character so the second day I decided to give him a high five and as he went to hit my hand I pulled away and walked off. hehe

Its all good fun. By the way should have the DVD by next week. Anybody want a copy pm me.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
As I see it, they deserve a good chance or two. As long as someone wants to fund it, I see no reason it shouldn't be made.

Hell, they might even get better with time, ala new voyages.

Something I'd rather enjoy seeing is a fan-made series about the missions of the Excelsior. I see no problem in recruiting Takei to take on the task of sulu, and Tim Russ has always been great with fan relations.

The whole alternate universe thing messes with me, but it's their money, not mine. Sometimes, risks need to be taken for a good product to be made. Maybe it will pay off, maybe it won't. Regardless, lessons will be learned and (hopefully) better work will be produced in time. Once again, I put New Voyages beside it as a comparison (especially as they share a significant quantity of cast members). Perhaps we'll get a great product in the near future.

The big problem appears to be a combination of production and writing. While the talent is there, the ability to use it and perhaps even the script itself is not. A good script can make or break a production, and a great director can work an good cast with a weak script into something pretty decent. Inconsistent production quality the rest of the way around just serves to limit improvement that much more.

Music is another weak spot. Too many fan productions either cannot afford an independent score or simply do not bother. Stock music just doesn't work. Only rarely can it adequately convey the proper atmosphere.

At the very least, the time of the independent filmmaker has come. I hope we see more of this, even if most is crap. Wouldn't be worse than Nemesis.
• Whats an actor? A director

Whats a director? An actor

Whats a crazy fuck like me doing on forum talking about acting i dont know
• Space GhostSpace Ghost Elite Ranger
While I understand most of the assessments stated above, it should be noted that as cheesy as some of the acting, music, and special effects are, this is a fan made production. We aren't talking about a major studio or someone like Steven Spielberg paying the bills. I can't speak for Of Gods and Men, but New Voyages is paid for completely by the fans themselves (but I would imagine this is too). Indeed, the creator of New Voyages once said that he pays for about 70% of the production costs himself.

They are working under extreme limitations when it comes to time and money so the end result can't be compared with a studio undertaking. While you may not like the end result--you are entitled to your opinion, of course--I don't think it's unreasonable to give them at least a little slack.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Hence my kindness with my remarks :D
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
All I'm saying, any film production requires a competent team, and you can't produce anything of quality if you cut corners. There is no easy way to do this right.

While admirable, this trailer just looks like something thrown together over the space of a few weekends. At any point of the production of a movie you need many talented professionals working at it. Why do you think the end credits are usually so long?

Money is only secondary here because those involved do this because they can afford it, otherwise they wouldn't do it. It's just that simple.

Actors do need the input of a capable director because they don't always see the big picture. That's what a director does, just like a big orchestra. There's little of that visible in this trailer. No guiding thread.

Just like a painting is not a bunch of color thrown together, or a good wine is not just fermented grape juice. Anyone can make vinegar. :D

As evidence that Tim Russ may actually be a good director, consider Living Witness.

I'm sure if they lightened up a little more in their attempts to recreate the original show, they'd be more successful.
