But while the price may be steep if one pays $299 for a phone and $200 for an MP3 player separately, he or she ends up paying the same amount for an iPhone. In other words, if you need both a new phone and an MP3 player, why not combine the two?
That is exactly what I did with my Treo... and it died on my the other day (thankfully it's still under warrantly and Verizon replaced it post-haste) and I did kinda go through withdrawl but I guess that's the price you pay for convenience?
I guess I justify spending the money on it cause I use it all the time.. if I spent like $200 on an mp3 player that I only use for specific things (like the gym and the subway) then it could seem like neglect but since the PDA/mp3 player/phone etc.. are all the same unit I can justify it cause I use it loads...
*shrugs* I needed a new mp3 player and phone and pda when I decided to get the Treo and actually it saved me money in the long run...
Sorry but apple is once again (IMHO) Guilty of artifically inflating the price of their products.
They got lucky witht the Ipod coming out when it did, otherwise i honestly feel they would have about the same market share that thier PC's have always had, very small compared to other alternatives. and not because of quality, but because of Price.
Likely, it'll get a full iWork suite to go with its functional application set. we'll just have to see what comes of it as we get closer to release.
I don't see what all the trouble is with it, though. The price is on par with the current competition. And since people are buying those in good quantity, it's obvious there's a substantial market for it. Clearly, most of us here are *not* it.
As far as price inflation, apple has never not inflated its prices, but it has never denied doing so. Part of it being such a proftiable company as of late is the power to develop a product that everyone wants at a price enough people can afford to pay, which trickles down through future products at lower costs, as with the current generation iPod. Though still very inflated over its competition, it also dominates because it is marketed so well. If ends up being a failure of a product, it will die like so many in the past. Give it time.

Who isn't, given the chance? Windows Vista is a prime example. Apple is like Nike. A fair proportion of the price is paying for the brand. They've gone to a lot of trouble to develop that brand.
Yes, but until Ipod, it was at the cost of their own market share. Apple today, is so far behind where they could be, or where they SHOULD be, because they priced themselves out of the budget of most people.
As for Ipod's, i still maintain that its not the be-all end-all of products, there are plenty of MP3 players out there that are better at less cost, but Ipod came along at the right time, with the right mix of features and look.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not Bashing apple, i happen to like their products (i'm about to buy a few Imacs for work). I just think that some of their business practices are insane.

Apple is able to fetch such high prices for its products because it treats even its low end items as premium quality. To become mainstream would either mean dilluting this aspect substantially and lowering the cost, which would itself further reduce the perception of premium nature. Apple makes one hell of a profit on everything it does, and moving into larger scale is not something it needs to do. In addition to this, it gains a following from the "underdog effect," appearing as if they are a lone soul fighting its way up from the bottom against the wills of those living the corporate lifestyle.
Again, given how many iPods, MacBooks, etc. apple has actually sold, is there even a problem here in any form?

Further, you can get an Apple MP3 play for a quarter of that price, anyway.
Interesting thing I read: apparently the iPhone doesn't have 3G. That seems like a great way to cripple it...

I seriously doubt that it will be unable to sync with Outlook anyways. My current generation iPod will sync my contacts and calender with Outlook.
