meh. looks good, but i'll never get one, just because its apple. im not saying im a micros***t fan, but every apple product i've owned has broken a couple of weeks after the warranty has run out; everything else that isnt apple is still working fine

hmm...

Oddly enough I have been wanting a newer ipod (current one is the original mini), and a better phone.

That thing is pretty nice looking. Looks like Cingular is going to carry it too!

Time to upgrade :D

Im not a staunch apple supporter but they have produced some very good products as of late. I have no loyalties to microsoft, all of my computers do run some version of xp but its more out of ease of use for the rest of family and interconnectivity on the network. All of the computers I work on at work run some form of linnux, unix and eve irix.

It's shiny!

I would very much like one, but not at that price with a 2 year contract.

My Sony E K700i is only 1yr and 6 months old and now the stupid joystick is failing. Same on the T610 before it, stupid Sony E have to keep using a flawed system. So I'm keen for a change. Dunno if my phone will last until the iPhone comes out over here. I'm due an upgrade in March so will just get whatever then and wait until the iPhone matures a bit more, let the kinks work em selves out ;)

just seen the pricing on that thing! i resented paying £130 for my current phone, there is nothing about the iPhone that would make me pay that much for one

And the screen will look terrible after a few weeks. And with a touchscreen: Remember keylock :)

Basically a new Windows Mobile PDA/Phone model....

It does have quite an interesting locking thing (which is no doubt now patented).

The iPhone will come in two versions: a 4GB, $499 model and an 8GB, $599 model. Both will require a two-year contract with Cingular, the exclusive U.S. carrier. Both models will be available beginning in June from Apple Stores and from Cingular.
It's a neat phone but... yeesh. It's called the "Mac"World Expo. I really wanted to find out what the "Top Secret" 10.5 features were. All we got was a set top box that I see no use for an a bleeding edge phone that'll take years to become generally accepted (just like the iPod did), and it's not coming out for half a year.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Well, Jobs did make a big thing in his presentation about Apple removing the word "Computer" from their name. :p
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
I was expecting more too. Watching the live web feeds I was getting a bit bored of them going on about the phone. They did seem to pad it out a bit. Its clear now that Leopard is still probably 2-3 months away at least. Developer releases haven't turned up anything majorly exciting since the last expo demo of it. So they have some work to do still.

Some nice good quality images of the phone here btw:

Holy snikies, and I thought the PS3 was high!

Heard inside Apple marketing: Well it has the function of the iPod, a phone and a PDA. If we just add what it costs to buy those individually, we should come pretty close to the right price shouldn'r we?
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Basically what they said at the presentation, too.

Though consider this: through Verizon, a Treo 700W costs roughly the same with a two year contract. Given the will and financial means to buy a 700W or an iPhone, I would get the iPhone, as I'm sure will many others.

It's a damned tempting device which is a good deal more expensive than was originally rumored ($249 for the 4gb model, $449 for the 8gb model...which would have been well within my means and my interest)

We'll likely see this thing head down in price as supply increases and demand levels. Remember how much the third and fourth generation ipods cost compared to the current.
• DaxDax Redshirt
dude, I paid $200 for my Treo 650 which is a pretty close match even though it's not as shiny...
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
The difference between a 650 and 700W is pretty significant. It may look the same, but the components underneath are vastly different. Substantially more powerful, the 700 is. Research into why the the price gap existed was quite enlightening.
• If only it could scan for lifeforms.

Scroll down till you see the slides with price. Then see what Jobs said for them.

Hmm, interesting.

But individual's demand curves never exhibit such perfect elasticity.

I was also going to mention that, but I was under the impression that he was referring to just that until I re-read the original post. :p

"The iPhone will come in two versions: a 4GB, $499 model and an 8GB, $599"

HOLY FUCKNUGGETS BATMAN

Come on people , Lets be real, sure having it in your pocket is neat, but you can buy a whole goddamned laptop for that money.

No way, would i spend that much on a phone, i'll stick to my cheap phone and my PDA thanks.
• SpiritOneSpiritOne Magneto ABQ NM
didnt see a price in the original link, or on the cingular site when I logged in to see if they had any data on them yet.

However, about the time that it comes out is when Im due a phone upgrade anyway, and since I have to have a phone for work, I can get my company to reimburse some of it. In the past they have paid for my phones, but something tells me my boss will shit if I turn in an expense report with a $600 phone on it.
• Space GhostSpace Ghost Elite Ranger
But while the price may be steep if one pays $299 for a phone and $200 for an MP3 player separately, he or she ends up paying the same amount for an iPhone. In other words, if you need both a new phone and an MP3 player, why not combine the two?
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Exactly Space Ghost. Thats where they hope to make sales. I need a new iPod soon and a phone. I used to walk to work every day so used my iPod. Now I bike to work so don't use my iPod hardly at all. So it would be a waste for me to splash out on a new 30gb iPod and a new phone as well. Combining the 2 would be ideal.

The main issues people are talking about here is lack of 3G support, and seemingly obvious lack of syncing to Outlook/Exchange services. If it had that it would be a real winner in the business market.

Except that, with the price, you're not actually saving anything and thus still wasting the portion of money that is effectively being spent on an iPod. ;)
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
You pay for having one less item in your pocket ;)

i just did spend that sort of money on a new laptop, and to my mind its infinitely more shiny than that iPhoney.

Falcon1: but i already have all those items in my pocket. i dont want to spend even more money on replacing them ;)
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
And i see this as being no different than any other all in one device, sure, it saves you from having to buy them seperately, but if it dies, then you lose BOTH devices.

I just can't fathom spending that kind of money on it, hell it costs the same as 10 car payemnts, almost a month's rent, 3 weeks of food,

excellent point :)

the only reason i've just got a new laptop is because i'm getting a bursary for my new course, and i was able to talk my folks into putting some money towards it for xmas. plus i can do so much more in it than i could on a phone. given what i want to do, i dont think the iPhone could ever be in the running. at least, not unless it can function as a proper laptop pc
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
But then most pda type phones are expensive. Plus I have no need for the functions they offer, hence I have stuck with general consumer phones until now. My boss has an O2 thing which he raves about, windows CE on it. Spends most of his time doing firmware updates and installing/uninstalling stuff. More work that necessary I feel.
