Oddly enough I have been wanting a newer ipod (current one is the original mini), and a better phone.
That thing is pretty nice looking. Looks like Cingular is going to carry it too!
Time to upgrade :D
Im not a staunch apple supporter but they have produced some very good products as of late. I have no loyalties to microsoft, all of my computers do run some version of xp but its more out of ease of use for the rest of family and interconnectivity on the network. All of the computers I work on at work run some form of linnux, unix and eve irix.
I would very much like one, but not at that price with a 2 year contract.
Basically a new Windows Mobile PDA/Phone model....
And with a touchscreen: Remember keylock :)
It does have quite an interesting locking thing (which is no doubt now patented).
The iPhone will come in two versions: a 4GB, $499 model and an 8GB, $599 model. Both will require a two-year contract with Cingular, the exclusive U.S. carrier. Both models will be available beginning in June from Apple Stores and from Cingular.
It's a neat phone but... yeesh. It's called the "Mac"World Expo. I really wanted to find out what the "Top Secret" 10.5 features were. All we got was a set top box that I see no use for an a bleeding edge phone that'll take years to become generally accepted (just like the iPod did), and it's not coming out for half a year.
Some nice good quality images of the phone here btw:

Holy snikies, and I thought the PS3 was high!
Heard inside Apple marketing: Well it has the function of the iPod, a phone and a PDA. If we just add what it costs to buy those individually, we should come pretty close to the right price shouldn'r we?
Though consider this: through Verizon, a Treo 700W costs roughly the same with a two year contract. Given the will and financial means to buy a 700W or an iPhone, I would get the iPhone, as I'm sure will many others.
It's a damned tempting device which is a good deal more expensive than was originally rumored ($249 for the 4gb model, $449 for the 8gb model...which would have been well within my means and my interest)
We'll likely see this thing head down in price as supply increases and demand levels. Remember how much the third and fourth generation ipods cost compared to the current.

Scroll down till you see the slides with price. Then see what Jobs said for them.
But individual's demand curves never exhibit such perfect elasticity.

I was also going to mention that, but I was under the impression that he was referring to just that until I re-read the original post. :p
HOLY FUCKNUGGETS BATMAN
Come on people , Lets be real, sure having it in your pocket is neat, but you can buy a whole goddamned laptop for that money.
No way, would i spend that much on a phone, i'll stick to my cheap phone and my PDA thanks.
However, about the time that it comes out is when Im due a phone upgrade anyway, and since I have to have a phone for work, I can get my company to reimburse some of it. In the past they have paid for my phones, but something tells me my boss will shit if I turn in an expense report with a $600 phone on it.
The main issues people are talking about here is lack of 3G support, and seemingly obvious lack of syncing to Outlook/Exchange services. If it had that it would be a real winner in the business market.
So it would be a waste for me to splash out on a new 30gb iPod and a new phone as well. Combining the 2 would be ideal.
Except that, with the price, you're not actually saving anything and thus still wasting the portion of money that is effectively being spent on an iPod. ;)

i just did spend that sort of money on a new laptop, and to my mind its infinitely more shiny than that iPhoney.
Falcon1: but i already have all those items in my pocket. i dont want to spend even more money on replacing them ;)
I just can't fathom spending that kind of money on it, hell it costs the same as 10 car payemnts, almost a month's rent, 3 weeks of food,
And i see this as being no different than any other all in one device, sure, it saves you from having to buy them seperately, but if it dies, then you lose BOTH devices.

excellent point :)
the only reason i've just got a new laptop is because i'm getting a bursary for my new course, and i was able to talk my folks into putting some money towards it for xmas. plus i can do so much more in it than i could on a phone. given what i want to do, i dont think the iPhone could ever be in the running. at least, not unless it can function as a proper laptop pc
FFS !
