Memory Testing software

I was wondering if anyone here knew of any reliable RAM esting software that is free.

I'm getting errors reading CDs and DVDs when copying to the hard drive, like when i am installing a game the files on the hard drive are corrupted. I have tried different DVD drives, Hard drives, and IDE ribbon cables and so am down to the MoBo, memory and Proc.

If anyone has any suggestions of software or what might be causing the errors, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    I believe this might help:

Yep, memtest is quite effective at finding most memory problems. I recommend you leave it looping for a few hours to really work the memory.
  • Alright, it's been running for almost three hours now, and is on pass 4. Is there a set number of passes it goes through, or does it just keep going until i tell it to stop?

Also, is any number of errors bad, or is there an acceptable ammount of errors that is considered "normal"

Yeah, Memtest just keeps churring until you tell it to stop. I usually leave the program running for 2 passes for quick tests and if any errors are discovered, it's time to change combs. For a nominal system, you should get zero errors, flat.

For more accurate results, I leave the bugger on for a whole night. :)

Great tool to have around. Free too.

I think memtest is actually like 7 or 8 tests, but I haven't used it in a while. You should get absolutely no errors with it. Any error indicates a problem with the memory. One or two passes are enough to verify there is nothing immediately wrong with the memory but you need a very extended run to really let things heat up. For hard testing I leave it on overnight and make sure to leave the room with no AC on or anything that might lower teperatures. I once bought a set of Corsair ram and got consistant lockups after playing games for a long time. Finally figured out that one of the modules was bad and the error wouldn't creep up until the memory had been running for a while. I never got errors on memtest until I realized the AC was cooling the memory just enough to avoid the error. Ran it at ambient temperature and effectively every 3 or so hours the error would pop up. Lowered the CAS timing from 2 to 2.5 and problm solved. Those are the kinds of problems that can drive you mad trying to figure out.
  • Thanks alot guys.
Well, I ran the test for about 3.5 hours and there were 1400+ errors, so I shut down, pulled one of the DIMMs and ran it again, no errors, pulled out the good one and put the other back in, almost 200s error after 1 pass. Put the first one back in and now everything runs just fine.

    Thank you very much again.

This really sucks though in the light that I also had one of my Hard drives die this week, and now I'm running with half the memory i used to.
