thats sad...
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
whats even sadder is that there seems to be no soul fans here, let alone fans of the man himself.... sheesh
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
I never know what to say in these thread, other than R.I.P.

I had no personal relationship to the man, I dont listen to soul, hes never "done" anything for me, but for his family and friends, and for his fans, Im sorry.

R.I.P. James Brown.

To be honest, James Brown belonged to a different generation. While he did have an impressive repertoire of popular songs, I can't say I heard much about him in the international media, other than the negative press. It's of course sad that he passed away and it's certainly a tremendous loss for those who appreciated him.

I'm not quite sure what else you expect to find here in the Zocalo.... this is still a B5 forum, even if it's been rather quiet regarding the subject matter.

There are public figures that die every single day. Ex-President Ford just died at the age of 93. I'd rather not see this forum evolve into an interactive obituary. So please, don't be upset by the apparent lack of respect to the departed. Besides, many people aren't even at home.

Anyway, c'est la vie...

The man isn't even cold yet, there are already people plotting on how to profit from his death....

The movie has no doubt been in development for a while now, well before he died. Even the article you linked to states that Brown was active in the development of the movie before he died.

still, it does seem a little tasteless coming so soon on the heals of his death, tho as you say Brown was involved in the project before his death.

i have to admit, im not a big fan of the soul/funk music Brown was famous for, but everyone knows a couple of his more famous songs. i even have a couple on the playlist ive got on now, and its a fairly random selection of music. doubly sad that he died on christmas day as well.

Perhaps, though I'll happily take a moment to spit on his corpse.

Who didn't see this coming? :D

I don't know or remember enough about Ford to feel one way or the other.

I don't think there's a way for politicians that allows them to go through the whole process and come out clean.

I'm afraid to ask, so what did Ford do that was so bad? Was it before Watergate or after, or both?

He pretty much continued Nixon's work. In 75, he met with Suharto and more or less gave him a green light and a lot of military and monetary aid to invade East Timor, which resulted in a long and brutal occupation and the deaths of tens of thousands. One more in a long list of dictators the US has happily supported because it served American interests in the region. He may not have been a butcher of Reagan's stature, but you don't get prizes for that.
• Tens of thousands? There are nowadays estimately almost 250 million people living in Indonesia... which of those figures is more disturbing?
• ArethusaArethusa Universal Cathode
Though it hardly makes much difference, it was actually more like 200,000.

Well, given the actual size of East Timor...
• TyvarTyvar Next best thing to a St. Bernard
Hell you want to find real irony in the East Timor situation, look at the fact that at the time the Aussies were all for it too, and in the end they were the ones who had to go in to try to clean the mess up.

And if its going to be that way you going to spit on carters corpse too when he dies? consdering he was the one that would have been responsible for Vickery's supposed US revitilization of the Khmer Rouge in 1979?

It's crossed my mind. As much as I do acknowledge the good he's done (or attempted, anyway), I hold him entirely accountable for the monstrous things he has also done. Chomsky has a pretty good point when he said that every American president since 1945, if judged by the standards of the Nuremberg trials, would be hanged, including Jimmy Carter.

And in case this gets too out of hand, I would not literally spit on Ford's corpse, though I hold no respect for him. It's amusing, really, how his PR campaign has kicked off. It's not quite as incredible as Reagan's post-death he-was-Republican-cowboy-Jesus campaign, but it's amusing nonetheless to see him hailed as great and noble hero of glorious nation of America when two years ago, you'd be hard pressed to get anyone in this country to say anything about him at all beyond how unremarkable his brief presidency was.

Whats funny is this lionizing of Ford is happening in our main stream media, while the usual rightwing sources are savaging the guy.

The gang at Townhall.com and the other conservative blogs are practicly throwing a party that he's dead.

As for the Standards of the Neurnburg tribunal, I know this is going to be heretical, but to me it was victors justice dressed up in fancy clothing. Im not saying they didnt deserve to be hung, but come on, why cant we admit things like "you started the war and lost so were going to fucking hang you cause your nuts?" is that so wrong?

then again, I have a very low sense of value of human life, living amongst people did that to me ;)

Pay your respects and take your politics out to the kerb please 'thusa, Tyvar, or I may be forced to take to you with a mic stand.

This is no place for politics, unless its perhaps something to do with being BLACK... and BEIN' PROUD... UGHhh...

I'm quite surprised to hear that conservatives are attacking him, but, admittedly, I don't follow any conservative blogs (or, well, any blogs, for that matter). The conservatives I've seen on forums and the like, however, have all seemed to be getting their great legacy hardons again. Indeed, most self identified liberals, too.

And I suppose you may be surprised, but I would completely agree with your assessment of Nuremberg. So, too, would Chomsky, I believe.

I guess I'll let the political derailment stop here at the request of ma brotha here. Ah, white people. (:p)
• TyvarTyvar Next best thing to a St. Bernard
Oh for gods sakes arethusa dont egg him on, god knows what delusions living in Oz puts in people! ;)

and dont white people me, or else I will fucking make sure the only music your able to hear for the rest of your life is polka bitch! :P ;)

And I wasnt much for soul, but I do like my jazz mmkay?
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
I make no claims to being a Brotha, I do however make claims to being someone respectful of great men, respectful of recently deceased great men.

Would you sit in pews crapping on like this at his funeral service ?

Ok, guys; take the debate somewhere else. If SB wants this to be a tribute thread, then leave the arguments out of it.

And RIP, Godfather*.

Sad he passed, he was cool. Sure he was for a different generation but when ever I thought of soul music and that whole "cool" era Brown always came to mind. Last thing I saw him in was the BMW mini film series "The Hire" where he stared along side Clive Owen, Danny Trejo and Gary Oldman.

RIP!
