The last book is coming out, then? Yay. That means I can buy the set and actually read 'em when it does. x-)
Oh there is still no publication date, i dont expect it before Christmas 2007 at the earliest, and more likely either July 2008 or Christmas 2008

Really, I thought it was mostly done....Obviously, editing and rewrites take time, but in my past experiences, that's usually just a couple of months.
Although, I don't follow mugglenet or anything else, I'm just going by stuff I vaguely remember from a couple of months ago...
Either way, my wife will be happy(I still haven't read any of them, but I enjoy the movies).

I'm just guessing, but thats how long i think it will be. some people think it will be out in 2007, but i really think 2008
The last i had heard, she was about 1/2 way through, that was a couple months ago.

I just checked mugglenet(my wifes preference) and based on what they say, you are absolutely correct. I just can't imagine setting a title in stone, as it were, without being 80-90% sure exactly what was happening.

She's been going on about having several titles in mind for quite a while now, she just wasn't sure which she was going to use.
The books are a lot of fun, if you havn't read them you should, they are fun. i refused to read them for quite a while, but started afrer the 2nd or 3rd was out.

Just because a book is only half written, that doesn't mean the author isn't 80-90% sure what's going to happen. From what I've head, she's one of those authors who plans everything out in exquisite detail before even the first book is written, so she's probably been fairly sure how it end since the first book was published.

Couple of months!? Umm.. no the average time is 18 months for a book to come out after the manuscript is received.

According to her, she's had the final chapter written since before book 3 was released.
Yeah, this makes me super excited but I bet next Christmas perhaps but I bet they might wait until some of the 6th movie is filmed, not sure... And J.K. has totally have everything planned out, check out her diary on her website (which is one of the coolest websites out there)
my prediction: Christmas 2008

That may just depend on the author/editor/publisher. The couple that I've followed closely, been involved with, were much shorter. It also depends on the need for fact checks and the like.
I'm not trying to be argumentative(sp?), just stating my experiences. And, by a couple of months, I meant 3-6. The other difference between my experiences and this is, Harry Potter is a phenomenon, the ones I've been involved in are national(not anything big, just giving feedback for friends), but not on the scope of HP. I am also considering the feedback phase happens before the manuscript turned in to editor/publisher phase. So my 3-6 timeframe comes after the feedback.
I am certainly no insider, so your experiences may be the norm and mine the exception.
Either way, I have a few other things to read first.
Once there is a release date, I can time my reading so I don't tear out my hair waiting to find out what's going to happen. If I am into something, waiting drives me nuts.(that's why I am somewhat lucky I stumbled into B5 during the rerun phase of season 3)
Sorry for rambling, I am a bit drug addled after surgery, left hand typing sucks!

As for publishing times, several months to set it for printing and run the presses before it comes out, and with a book as popular as her's, they might very well invest in the extremely rare copy editing stage (normally that is left to the author to do themselves, since it's too costly to actually pay someone to do).
Further, her book is written by hand. This adds extra time as people have to decipher hand writing :)
what did you have surgurized?
i had some tendon work done on my right arm. typing isn't nearly as bad as writing though...

Hope that works out, i had tendon repair twice in my right hand (failed both times) and a major surgury on my right arm (emergency Fasciotomy) so i know what having one arm out of commission is like.
sucks balls.
I'll put this in spoiler tags, in case anyone doesnt want to know something about the next book that JKR has admitted.
Spoiler: JK Rowling has admitted, that Ron and Hermionie will become much more than friends in the next book, while this has been hinted at all along, i have a big problem with it, because JK Rowling has also cofirmed that at least 1, possibly 2 main characters will die.
Now tell me, What happens to teenagers, in dangerous sitiuations when they finally have sex... Come on, you've seen the movies, you've read the books... THEY DIE! Thats right, the big bad guy, gets to them and kills them, usually in nasty ways.!
I doubt she could kill off Harry, but she has to do something irreparable to him so that there is a feeling of an end to the series.
My guess is that Harry's demise leaves a power vacuum that Ron, with proper motivation and hardships, eventually will fill up. Growing from an insecure and averagelly talented wiz-kid to a true master.
I've only seen the movies, but from that I take that JKR is after to tell a story that has a lesson in it. In that sense, she'd be off to a good end by finishing off Harry himself, adding some pain to the affair with Hermione's demise and leaving Ron to carry Harry's cape.
This from an uneducated gut-instinct. :) Can't wait to read the buggers to find out how close to the mark I got it.
Oh, and JKR has also admitted that before Ron and Hermionie get together, she has a fling with Neville
:D
I say Norbert comes back and lights Voldemort's hair on fire, leading to much "Three Stooges" hilarity!
Spoiler: YES I KNOW HE'S BALD!
Um, why is random speculation tagged as spoilers in this thread?

Because the random speculation highlights plot points that people who haven't read all the books might not know about.
